The RCID Camera Project

The RCID camera project has been a highly successful layer in the fight against crime. All 6 Licence Plate Recognition Cameras and 40 Overview Cameras in the RCID are focused on public spaces where vehicles and pedestrian activity can be easily captured.

CAMERAS

The cameras are monitored 24/7 by the controllers in the Communications Hub. Capture, access, and dissemination of information is strictly controlled by the POPI Act and is only available to SAPS for investigative purposes.

As a result of the contribution of residents to the Camera Project initiated in 2012, the cameras and servers are funded and owned by the RCID. New residents are encouraged to contribute to this fund. The monitoring of the cameras is funded by FADT and, in addition, FADT also contributes a monthly fee for on-going maintenance.

As funds permit, the RCID meets periodically with FADT and SAPS to discuss the purchase and placement of additional cameras.
